Bahman Jalali’s (Tehran, 1945-2010) photos of the Iran-Iraq war from the beginning of the 1980s are without a doubt amongst the starkest war photos that have ever been seen. However he was also a teacher and trained a new generation of photographers, including Arash Hanaei, whose burnt and maimed dolls (from his series ‘The Benefits of Vegetarianism’) continue a sinister dialogue with the images of his mentor.
