Are fairs really on the way out? Come on! Art Basel, after the success of its Parisian reopening last October, is held in Miami Beach in its largest configuration: 283 galleries! This reveals the need for real-life encounters, without questioning the undeniable progress of digital platforms. Although American exhibitors from North to South form the backbone of the show, particularly in the 213 booths of the main section, it is clear that the power of attraction for galleries from the Old Continent remains unchanged. As proof of this influence, in addition to such diverse names as Lia Rumma, Lisson, Ropac, Xavier Hufkens and José de La Mano, the fair was chosen to award the Etant Donnés prize to an artist from the French scene. This is why we placed it in a prominent position in our usual selection of nearly twenty artists, alongside representatives from the Americas, Asia or Africa: a way of underlining Miami Beach’s role as a crossroads.
