Renato Leotta lives and works between Turin – where he founded Cripta747, one of the most noteworthy artist-run spaces in Italy – and Acireale, which is a source of inspiration because of the Sicilian origins of his family. Like an archaeologist of the here and now, he starts by observing the environment. Working across various mediums including sculpture, installation, textile and film, Leotta incorporates natural elements such as gravity, the moon and the ocean into his work. Recent projects have seen him working on both sides of the Atlantic, drawing inspiration from the coastlines of Sicily and Portugal and studying the relationship between the natural and built environment in Long Island. Whether he is taking photos of the full moon with a camera obscura submerged in the Hudson River, or casting sand relief sculptures on the beaches of Portugal, Leotta’s work examines our perception of nature in the Anthropocene.
